Bicosoeca petiolata, two crops of the above image. In contrast to choanoflagellates like for example Sphaeroeca volvox (with a single flagellum) the species of the group Bicosoecida have two different flagella >> (Heterokonta). The movement of the anterior, hairy flagellum (arrowhead) causes the cell to move forward, whereas the smooth flagellum which is positioned posteriorly (marked by arrow) is used to attach the cell to the lorica (Lo). (2)
